Moments of Joy: Lester the Loquacious

Lester SmithThere are many people in the world who have a way with words. They always seem to have the perfect phrase or saying for every situation. They know just the right moment to drop a witty comment or a funny little joke. One resident who lived at the Pearland Cottage was just that person. Lester had a way to brighten anyone’s day with his actions and words. Lester was known as the official greeter of the cottage. It didn’t matter if the person was a staff member that he saw every day or a first time visitor, each received a very specialized greeting from Lester. Each greeting was followed by a wave and a million dollar smile.

Lester was always a positive and easy going guy. He loved to talk to the caregivers and manager about everything, but his favorite topic was cars. Lester used to own an old car service station in the Pearland area, so he knew a great deal about fixing cars. Apparently he took matters into his own hands and made sure that the caregivers knew basic car mechanics. He even taught all the staff at the cottage the proper way to change a tire! He was always eager to lend a helping hand and to share his car wisdom. Everyone’s favorite memories of Lester were two specific phrases that he frequently stated. The first was “I am happier than a dead bird in the sunshine.” This was his most common response when asked how his day was going or how he was feeling. It never failed to make the recipient crack a smile and even let go of a little laugh. His second phrase was “Roses are red, violets are blue…” followed by whatever he felt like saying to make it a poem. Sometimes his poem was heart-felt and full of emotion. Other times he would just say random things to make everyone laugh.

Lester never failed at always having something to say. Whether it was one of his famous phrases, a little car fact or just a simple hello with a warm smile, he knew what you needed to hear at that moment. We all need people like Lester in our lives, someone to make your day brighter or to give you a little of their wisdom. We thank you Lester for many hours of laughter and joy you brought to the Pearland Cottage. We hope you are enjoying your roses and violets high in the sky with a great deal of sunshine.
