Everyone knows that eating healthy foods and maintaining an active lifestyle is good for your whole body. Foods that are important to consider in a brain healthy diet are blueberries, fish, nuts, avocados, whole grains and dark chocolate. Blueberries are high in anti-oxidants, which help to keep your whole body healthy. Other high anti-oxidant foods to include in your diet are kale, spinach, broccoli, eggplant, prunes, raisins, strawberries, oranges and red grapes. Many believe that adding 1-cup of one or more of these fruits and veggies produce the best results. Fish provides a great source of omega-3 essential fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids are important for healthy brain functions. Some nutritionists suggest wild caught salmon for a good fish choice. Other cold water fish the have omega-3 fatty acids are trout, tuna and halibut. So start adding a 4-ounce serving of fish 2-3 times a week in your diet. Nut and seeds are a good source of vitamin E, which helps to have less cognitive decline as a person ages. There are many nut choices to add to your daily diet. Those include walnuts, almonds, sunflower seeds, flax seed, cashews and peanuts. Be careful of the amount of sodium associated with each type of nut. Many come in low sodium options. Avocados help to lower blood pressure and contribute to a healthy blood flow. Both of these perks are good for your brain. Avocados are high in calories so only add about a ¼ of one to one meal a day. Whole grains are a good source to reduce the risk of heart disease. Since every organ in the body is dependent on the heart functioning to its highest potential, keeping the heart healthy keeps the brain healthy. Whole grains to add to your daily diet include, oatmeal, brown rice and whole grain breads. Lastly dark chocolate, yes chocolate, is a good food to add to your daily diet to keep your brain healthy. In small moderation, dark chocolate is an excellent source of anti-oxidants and contains natural stimulants to enhance focus and concentration.
