The History of AutumnGrove Cottage

(L to R) Bob, Sheri, Roxie and Randy

It all started with two friends and one great idea…..AutumnGrove Cottage would not be here today if it wasn’t for the two brilliant minds who came together almost ten years ago. Our co-founders, Randy Vanstory and Bob Fuller, became friends through their previous jobs and soon realized that they would be great business partners. Both having the thought in their head to run a successful business that served the needs of others; they sat down one day at a little restaurant in Schulenburg, Texas to brainstorm the idea of AutumnGrove Cottage. After what was supposed to be a simple lunch meeting, they ended up staying at the restaurant and gathered ideas for five hours. Both men agreed there was an opportunity in the Alzheimer’s assisted living industry and decided to dive further into how they could be a part of it. Randy had once attended a conference about assisted living and nursing home facilities and remembered one of the speakers discussing an Alzheimer’s facility in New Jersey. Bob and Randy decided to call upon the company in New Jersey to take a look at what they offered to people who suffered from Alzheimer’s.

AutumnGrove Cottage is born….After visiting the facility in New Jersey and many months of research and touring various assisted living and nursing home facilities, Bob and Randy finally agreed to the specific care they wanted to provide families. Throughout exploring the market in Houston, Texas, they discovered there were not many assisted livings or nursing homes that solely offered care to those with Alzheimer’s or other dementias. They had also noticed that the type of care for people with memory loss was very specific and many places did not offer it. So after narrowing down a multitude of ideas, they knew that unique Alzheimer’s care was the market they wanted to help and AutumnGrove Cottage was born.
Copperfield BackyardThe mission of AutumnGrove is to provide personalized Alzheimer’s care in a smaller home-like environment. We want our residents to feel at home in our cottages and we want our family members to feel comfortable knowing that their loved ones are receiving the best possible Alzheimer’s and dementia care. Lots of time and effort went into the design of our cottages. First and foremost we want them to feel like your grandmother’s home, a place where you know you are loved and a place you can call home. Our cottages are designed to house 16 residents in private bedrooms with a large common area adjacent to an open kitchen. Each cottage has an inviting backyard with a covered porch and walking path through the gardens. Secondly AutumnGrove wants to provide specialized care to those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia related disorders. Our staff is specifically trained in memory care, brain stimulating activities and dementia related behaviors. As we say at AutumnGrove, memory care is not what we do it is ALL we do.

So in 2005 we opened our very first cottage in the Copperfield area of northwest Houston. We were welcomed into the community with open arms and warm hearts. Our second cottage, in Katy, opened a few months later and the reaction from the community was just the same. Since 2005, we have continued to grow our business by opening five more locations in the greater Houston area and two in San Antonio with one of the two opening in December 2013.  We are humbled to serve all of these communities and families with unique Alzheimer’s care and we hope that we have helped to honor the lives of those who suffer from this terrible disease and those who love and care for them.
