Welcome to the “Our Heartbeat” series! In these blog posts I will talk about the people who are the core of AutumnGrove Cottage. From managers to residents and everyone in between, you will get to catch a glimpse of our heart and soul.
Our Heartbeat: Going the Extra Mile…Literally
I am going to start off the series with a story about two wonderful caregivers at The Woodlands Cottage. Twyla and Janice. These two ladies have what I call gumption. They work hard to make the lives of their residents as joyful and pleasant as possible. They always go above and beyond for the residents and the family members to make sure everyone is happy and comfortable. Twyla and Janice always rise to a challenge with their heads held high and smiles on their faces.
Twyla and Janice cared for a resident at The Woodlands cottage named Marsha. Marsha was always a woman on the go. The only time she was not on the move was when she was sleeping. Walking continuously around the cottage and backyard, Marsha would end up walking 40 miles a day! Talk about a great workout plan! Since Marsha never sat down, the staff at The Woodlands cottage had to come up with food and activities for her to eat and do on the go. For AutumnGrove caregivers and manager, this was an easy task. They created a plan specifically for Marsha. Everything for her was made to be small and portable.
The real challenge for Twyla and Janice came when Marsha said that she wanted to go shopping. She always talked about shopping and needing to run errands. Twyla and Janice put their heads together and came up with a brilliant plan. They were going to take Marsha to Walgreens. Ok, I know this doesn’t sound extravagant or even that exciting, but it was heaven for Marsha. The great thing about Walgreens is there is only one door for you to enter and exit the building. This was important since Marsha not only walked a lot, but also at a brisk pace. So either Twyla or Janice would stand at the door and the other would walk around with Marsha as she shopped. After a couple of weeks of going to Walgreens, Twyla and Janice came up with other places for Marsha to shop at. One of Marsha’s favorite places was Baskin Robbins because she loved ice cream!
Twyla and Janice truly went the extra mile to find places for Marsha to shop and enjoy an afternoon out on the town. These two ladies took the initiative to come up with a plan for Marsha. They were not told what to do, nor were they asked. They simply loved Marsha and knew they could give her their time and efforts to let her do what every woman loves, shop.
