Alzheimer’s Awareness Month

Print

In just three short weeks Alzheimer’s Awareness will be on a whole new level. September is World Alzheimer’s Month and this means people all over the world will be spreading the word about Alzheimer’s and will be fundraising to help support research to cure the disease. Every year since 1994 Alzheimer organizations have observed World Alzheimer’s Day on 21 September and the day will continue to play an important and key role during the World Alzheimer’s Month events. Named after neurologist Alois Alzheimer the disease causes progressive damage on the brain. The theme for World Alzheimer’s Month 2013 is ‘Dementia: a journey of caring’. Activities will focus on reducing the stigma which is associated with dementia and making communities more dementia-friendly.

Many Alzhiemer’s communities and organizations have rallied together over the years and put on walks to show their support. One of the most known support walks is Walk to End Alzheimer’s by the Alzheimer’s Association. The walk is held annually in more than 600 communities nationwide and this inspiring event calls on participants of all ages and abilities to reclaim the future for millions. When you participate in Walk to End Alzheimer’s, your fundraising dollars fuel the mission-related initiatives of care, support and research. In addition, your actions, both through fundraising and participating in the event, help to change the level of Alzheimer’s awareness in your community. At a Walk event, you can learn more about Alzheimer’s disease and the support programs and services offered by your local chapter. You will also have unique opportunities to get involved with the cause through advocacy initiatives and clinical trial enrollment. These experiences, in addition to other on-site opportunities, help each participant connect to their reason for walking.

I encourage each and every one of you to sign up for a walk in your community. To find one near you click HERE. Go out and show your support of Alzheimer’s and dementia. Whether you have personally been effected by the disease or just want to help out from the goodness of your heart, now is the time to do it. Sign up for a walk today and get ready to make September 2013 the most influential World Alzheimer’s Month ever.
